Consider using a basic page if...
the page has a very specific focus (e.g., a contact us page, a page with details about a specific program, etc.)
the content is mostly static
the page needs to relate to other pages for faceted search
you need to have more control over the page's meta properties
Landing Pages
Consider using a landing page if...
You want a jumbotron or a background image for a row
the page content is highly dynamic
the page will act as a "hub" to other pages
You are just building your homepage
